Longfield Recycling Centre to Close

by timpickstone on August 3, 2012

Bury Council has written to all Prestwich councillors informing us that the recycling centre at the Longfield Centre is to close “very shortly”.

The Council’s ‘reasoning’ is that it costs a lot to keep the site clean and tidy, and that it has to pay to dispose of the items. It suggests that the site is no longer needed because of the full household recyling that we now have in place (blue, brown and green bins).

Personally, I’m hugely disappointed. In the last few years we’ve seen the loss of the recycling facility at Tescos, last year Prestwich Tip closed completely, and the only other recycling site in Prestwich closed (Upper Wilton Street near Heaton Park Metrolink) without notice or consultation last year.

Obviously we do have a much improved recycling service at our own homes, but I know many people still want to use an additional facility for things that don’t fit in our own bins, and for recyclables that are not allowed in the green/blue/brown bins.

Bury and Radcliffe have their own recycling centres. In Prestwich we’ve had four close in less than 4 years.

I like many of my neighbours refused delivery of the green bins as we do not have the space for a 4th bin.
I was told by the council that the green bags would not be emptied along with the green bins and it would be my responsibility to empty this at one of the local recycling centres.
I have been fulfilling my part of the agreement but as there is no longer a local recycling centre I will now have no option other than to dispose of my waste paper in the ordinary grey bin..So much for encouraging people to recycle!
I find it hard to believe that there is not a need for a recycling centre. I regulary used the longfield centre and this was regularly used by the locals..Many bins would be full to bursting so where is all this waste now being left?
