Heaton Park Metrolink and Cycle Lockers

by timpickstone on September 18, 2012

Last week at Bury’s Council I asked two questions to Bury’s Transport Committee reps about Heaton Park Metrolink.

First was about the apauling state of the paintwork after all the improvement works that have taken place there. Workmen seemed to have spent all year improving the station and I was hoping that this paintwork wasn’t going to be what we were going to have to put up with for the next 20 years!

Apparently crews WILL be returning to improve the paintwork – we we will have to wait and see.

My second question was about the new cycle storage cupboards that have been provided. (People may remember that this was our compensation for the (in my view ridiculous) view that bikes cannot be taken on the Metrolink off peak (ie when its less busy). These cycle lockers are (I think) at all the stations on the Bury line.

We have our four cycle storage cupboards, but they are always locked with no bikes in!

Apparently, you have to be a member of the ‘BLUC’ (the Bicycle Lockers Users Club) run by Transport for Greater Manchester. It costs £10 for 2 years and you get given a key. Metrolink seem to have been keeping this a secret, as there certainly isn’t any informatio to tell us this!

On inspecting the lockers yesterday, this is the sorry state they are in. I cannot be the only person who will be worried about leaving my bike in a locker that can obviously be opened by vandals.

I think it is also worth noting the bike lockers only seem to be an ideal perching spot for gangs of teenage lads at night. It’s not somewhere I feel is safe enough for anyone I care about to travel there on their own at night. The improvements have done little to improve the space and with the service questionable in terms of reliability anyway nowadays I have chosen to bike commute and use a car at all other times.

Dear Tim

Thanks for raising these issues – I’d been wondering when the stationed would be finished. One main point you could raise next time is why there isn’t even any external signage to say it’s Heaton Park Met stop!

Regards
