Bonfire Night Safety

by timpickstone on September 22, 2012

In recent weeks I have raised with the Council the issue of safety around bonfire night, and that people felt safe during the bonfire night period.

Reassuringly, Bury is part of ‘Operation Treacle’. This is a Greater Manchester wide event tackling the anti-social behaviour around Halloween and Bonfire night.

The Council’s contribution includes:

  • Joint inspections with Fire and Police to all firework retailers/wholesalers.
  • Test purchases at targetted retailers by a young volunteer.
  • Training of PCSOs.
  • Assisting in the ‘Be Safe Be Cool’ event at all schools in the borough.
  • Dealing with complaints from the public re ASB or safety of fireworks.
  • Distribute safety posters to schools.
  • The Police and Fire service have produced this website to promote safety over the whole ‘autumn period’ including Haloween and Bonfire night and have produced this short video (below) to promote Operation Treacle.

I know that some local people can find this a worrying time of year, and please do not hesitate to get in touch with me if there are specific things that you would like me to raise with the Police or the Council. If you are aware of any shops which are illegally selling fireworks to people who are under age, again let me know.

There are also discussions with the managers of Heaton Park around improvements they are continuing to make to this major event to ensure it is a safe event, and also ensure that those of us who live around the park are not adversely affected. If you have specific ideas or comments on the event in the Park please get in touch and I can feed these in.
