Bury’s Labour Leader (attempting to) cover his tracks on Anti-Royal Family comments…

by timpickstone on 19 November, 2010

Oh dear oh dear, the Leader of the Labour Party in Bury, Cllr Mike Connolly, appears to be attempting to cover the tracks of his highly inappropriate comments about the Royal Family earlier in the week.

In response to comments congratulating Prince William and Kate Middleton on their engagement, Bury’s Labour leader Cllr Mike Connolly asked “Will these multi-millionaire parasites be paying for their own wedding?”. Read the full details on Richard Baum’s blog here.

Councillor Connolly is, of course, entitled to his own views, but as a civic leader in our Borough, its certainly my opinion that these sort of views are highly inappropriate. Councillor Connolly should apologise.

The Labour Party, I’m guessing, does not hold these views on our Royal Family. In fact earlier in the year Ed Miliband’s predecessor sacked a Labour Party election candidate for saying something very similar. Here’s the newspaper story from that time.

So earlier today I wrote to Harriet Harman, currently standing in for Ed as he’s on paternity leave, asking whether she supported the views of Councillor Connolly as her Party’s Leader in Bury. I’m looking forward to her reply.

Since the story broke there has been some quick use of the DELETE button up at Bury Labour HQ. First Cllr Connolly amended his post to delete the word “parasite” (but left in the rest). A couple of hours later and WHOLE DISCUSSION seems to have been deleted from Facebook!

Luckily for the voting public of Bury we managed to take a copy of the offending post last night, before it was deleted…

Connolly should go. Well done for letting the people of Bury know what we’re dealing with.

This is nothing more than a useful distraction. A lot of people are more interested in harsh political realities than the royal wedding and Mike Connolly’s views upon it

Please can local Lib Dems express their views on the raising of tuition fees and abolition of EMA. This is a real issue and one which LD councillors must address in the light of the pre-election pledges made, the division within the party and the fact that a parliamentary vote os looming.

If you think Connolly popping at Wills and Kate is a bigger issue, you are mistaken.

Andy, there’s no reason things like this should go ignored just because some people have other things on their mind.

Please can local Lib Dems express their views on the raising of tuition fees and abolition of EMA. This is not an issue that going to go away and at this rate will be one the destroys the party. Silence is cowardice.

Just a quick note to thank Tim for responduing to me personally and in some detail. I’m also heartened by today’s news reports.
