Make sure you are Registered to Vote

by timpickstone on 5 November, 2019

As people will no doubt have noticed …. a UK General Election is taking place on Thursday 12 December 2019.

To vote in a general election you need to

  • Be 18 or over on the day of the election
  • Be a British, Irish or qualifying Commonwealth citizen
  • Be resident at an address in the UK (or a British citizen living abroad who has been registered to vote in the UK in the last 15 years)
  • Not be legally excluded from voting

You also need to be on the electorial register. If you’ve moved recently or changed your name, you may need to re-register.

This needs to be done by November 26. You can register here: www.gov.uk/register-to-vote

Can I vote by post?
Many people already vote by post in every election. If this is you, then your postal votes will arrive as normal about 12 days before the election.

If you would like to vote by post – many people are saying this because 12th December is in the middle of winter – then you need to register. Again the deadline is 26 November 2019.

You can download a form here (this needs to be printed out).
