by timpickstone on 11 March, 2020

The Bury Special School Nursing Team, based at Elms Bank School and Millwood Primary School, have been successful in their bid to the Queen’s Nursing Institute Funds for Innovation Programme 2020.

The Team have been awarded £5000 to support their work with young people with learning difficulties and their diet and nutrition needs.

The team want to increase the number of children within the healthy weight range at Bury schools, increase access to and intake of healthier foods, and working with children with learning, sensory or communication difficulties to promote healthy eating. The team will also be working with families, to explain the importance of a healthy diet.

Helen Ashwell, School Nurse, Elms Bank School said:

“This money will be used to help us improve and increase our existing work with children across Bury to promote the benefits of healthy eating. Often, we see children, especially those with learning, sensory or communication difficulties, living off a very limited diet. With time and patience, we’re able to help support those young people to eat a greater variety of food and improve their overall health.”

The School Nursing Team are part of the Northern Care Alliance NHS Group (NCA). The NCA brings together the Salford Royal and Pennine Acute trusts and operates hospitals and community services in Salford, Oldham, Bury, Rochdale and North Manchester.
